noswayze asked: How do you make friends with scary people such as Alan Moore and Harlan Ellison?

Which is such a strange question. I’ve been friends with Alan for about 28 years (I sent him a copy of my first book, GHASTLY BEYOND BELIEF, with a note telling him how much I appreciated what he did, and he called the naxt day saying “I lost a day’s work because of you…”) and friends with Harlan for about 26 years (I met him the same day he met his wife, Susan. I’d been sent to interview him by an English newspaper, which closed down before it could publish it, and I resold the interview to a magazine, which promptly closed down with the issue with the interview in it half-printed, and then I put it away, because I did not want to close any more periodicals) and I cannot think of any adjective I would be less likely to use for either gentleman than “scary”.
