In that era most people left school and went to work at 16 with O Levels and/or other similar level qualifications (CSEs, City and guilds etc.) and it was less common than now to stay on to 18 and sit A Levels etc. Today in the UK, every child is supposed to stay in school/college or some sort of vocational training like an apprenticeship til 18, but that’s a very recent thing.

I was finally able to get my GED in my 20s and I’m actually in university now even though I never thought I would be. Life sure ain’t linear, I hope whatever path yours takes brings you happiness. I definitely just wanted to warn young folk who might not fully see the consequences, since teens rarely do, but sometimes life just effing happens.
