I know it’s not the same, but as a young teen I was discovering what music I liked and resonated with, which happened to be nu-metal. My parents would refer to it as “awful noise” so often that I became ashamed and embarrassed for liking it. They would also say it had dark lyrics and I shouldn’t fill my mind with it. Even now if I’m listening to music and it has a lot of screaming in it and someone else is around, I’ll quickly turn it off so it doesnt offend them.
