I’m sorry, I usually like to post without commentary, but this is and has always been a personal blog and I just have to document that today was incredible.

The book signing for Ocean at the End of the Lane (an incredible book, sweet and terrifying at the same time) was on the 6th but it went well past midnight. August 7th, technically, is when I spoke actual words to Neil Gaiman. For the second time I suppose. I went to a book signing for Anansi Boys when I was seventeen, but then I only spoke two words, and barely.

I sort of psyched myself up because I really, really wanted to thank him for how supportive and loving he and Amanda Palmer were to everone after Ashlie lost her life, and how their presence was appreciated so much at Occupy, attempt to communicate how much it meant to everyone in Vic to hear from them and how they’ve never forgotten and it brought such solace. I think I may have. I kept getting snagged by my own brain. I don’t remember a word I said, it was primarily gibberish, but I think he understood. He hugged me, and he meant it. I retreated sort of quickly because I was shaking and getting misty (ugh) but it was so very wonderful and important. A finer night I know I’ll never see.

It wasn’t gibberish at all.

And on a day like today, when a dear friend of mine died unexpectedly, when Amanda was there with the body, and then with his daughters, while I was a thousand miles away signing books in Canada, it meant more than you’ll know. Thank you.
