After 15 years of teaching, a professor at a Christian college was forced to quit his job after he came out as transgender.

H. Adam Ackley was a professor of theology at Azusa Pacific University when he came out as a trans man about a year ago. He’s now been asked to leave the university, just halfway through a five-year contract. He says it’s not because the college’s administrators were transphobic, but because they did not think donors, parents and supporting churches would respond well to having a trans faculty member.

Speaking on his difficulties, he said: ‘I tried to conform to Christian womanhood as best I could.

’[I was] told by my spiritual advisors and then spouse that recovery, sanity and preservation of my family required me to deny my now recognized transgendered identity. I once again struggled with self-medicating, self-injuring and self-starving of the female body during a suicidal relapse.

‘This is what Christian transphobia does.’

That last sentence. Oh man. We have some work to do.
