Dear Mr Gaiman

I went to see the audio-described performance of The Ocean at the End of the Lane this past Friday (it's a shame there's only one ad performance per theatre, I'd have loved to see it twice), and I was lucky enough to be able to take a touch tour beforehand.

I have to say, I was completely blown away by the amount of detail put into the sets, some of which I don't think even sighted people would be able to notice, like the tub of vitalite and the bag of *ugh* mighty white (Granddad worked for Mother's Pride, so mighty white was verboten) on the table or the hideous textured wallpaper on the wall below the winow.

It was absolutely clear just how much love and passion went into making the play from everyone involved, and I could hear in every word just how much the chap doing the audio description cared about conveying as much of what was happening on stage as possible.

Truly it was one of the best experiences I've ever had at the theatre

That means a lot to me. And I will pass this along to the National Theatre. Thank you!

Hello Mr Gaiman! I just saw The Ocean At The End of The Lane in Edinburgh last night and LOVED it. Everything about it was incredible but one of my favourite parts was the music! It was so beautiful and atmospheric. Did you have any involvement in choosing a composer or anything like that?

The amazing music is by Jherek Bischoff, who is a genius and a good friend of mine – we met when he was bass player in Amanda Palmer’s band in 2012 – and I had no idea he was involved until we were heading into the production. It was a magical sort of a bonus.

You can hear and download the music at Jherek’s Bandcamp site (among other places).

Hello! So I saw Ocean at the End of the Lane on a study abroad trip in London right before covid and ... I still cry if I think about it too hard it was amazing! 💕

Also our theatre professor tweeted about us loving it and you responded or smth and it made our day!

neil-gaiman:

It made me cry too. And the hardened theatre reviewer sitting next to me. I saw tears splash down on his notebook. I’m so thrilled it’s opening in the West End finally this year, and hoping that the UK doesn’t screw up the country’s reopening, because I want people to be able to see it so much.

People in the comments are going “I didn’t know about this!” so… here’s the West End trailer.

The Hunger Bird, on display at the New Blades exhibition.

One hell of a ride. My first time creating a creature of this size. The plaster mould fell apart, and I was told to quit three times, but here it is. I fixed an unfixable project.
And I reached the goal that I’ve been heading towards for a large part of my education - I brought my imagination to life.
Something I plan to keep doing, and something I hope will inspire and create a sense of wonder in both young and old.
Hopefully a better photo will come soon, the red eyes are an important feature! Stay tuned.

Thank you to Neil Gaiman for inspiring me with your own imagination, I hope it is to your liking!

Isn’t this glorious?

STORY TIME

On the-ever-present-julie’s recommendation, I read Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane.  I absolutely adored the whole book, but especially the description throughout.  One part that really caught my attention was the part in chapter nine when the thing in the main character’s foot is described as the silver of an egg blackened by soot and floating in salt water.  I’d never heard of such a thing before, but it seemed such an oddly specific kind of silver that I tried it.
you have no idea how hard it is to blacken a whole egg with candle soot without burning yourself there were so many better ways i could have done this

tl:dr if you were wondering what the heck kind of silver that thing in that book was, it looked like this

You have no idea how much I love that someone did this. And photographed it.

You see the black egg in picture #2? That became silver to the eye when placed in the salt water. And it floats (because of the salt)…
